Why a Remanufactured Engine Might Be the Best Option for Your Truck

If you drive a truck with a diesel engine in it that needs significant repairs, you may want to consider one of the many remanufactured diesel engines on the market to put in your truck. There are some things remanufactured diesel engines offer, and cost savings is often one of the most significant.

Choosing Your New Engine

When you are in the market for a new diesel engine for your truck, you will find many different options to select from. Remanufactured diesel engines are available from your local dealer, rebuilt diesel engines are often available from the local engine or machine shop, and new engines are readily available from the manufacturer. 

While each engine option has some benefits, a remanufactured diesel is cost-effective, nearly new, and already assembled and ready to install in your truck once you receive it. Remanufactured engines can also be installed by your local auto repair shop for you.

The Differences

Many people assume that rebuilt and remanufactured diesel engines are the same things, but some differences could be important to you. A remanufactured engine typically uses a new or reconditioned engine block and heads, and the parts installed in the engine block are factory original replacement parts. The remanufactured engine is essentially the same as the original engine that cam in your truck, and it can be installed using all the factory accessories with no problems. 

It is not a performance upgrade, but the idea behind remanufacturing engines is to create a perfect replacement engine for the customer that needs a new one but does not care about adding power or performance. 

A rebuilt engine often starts with your engine block that is stripped, tested, cleaned, and painted. Once that is complete, the engine can be assembled with new parts, but they may not be OE (original equipment) parts. The internal engine parts used could be another brand, or they may be performance parts that will add some power to your engine. 

Often rebuilding the engine is cheaper than buying a remanufactured diesel engine, but the time to rebuild your engine typically takes longer. You can purchase rebuilt diesel engines that start with a block the engine builder already has, but they will often require your engine block in exchange for the new one. 

Engine Warranties 

When you buy a remanufactured diesel engine, it may come with a warranty, especially if it is factory remanufactured. The rebuilt engine you are getting from an engine builder will also carry a guarantee from the builder, but they are typically only good for a few months and often only cover the workmanship and not the parts used.  Check with an auto shop to learn more about warranties.
